A Name that Tells a Story - Pt 2, No 3, 2007


1. Find the meanings of these words from the story.
loop - A curve or circle in a piece of string, rope
persuade - To make someone do something, by telling them reasons why they should do it
desperate - If you are desperate, you will do anything to change situation
current - The movement of water in a river or an ocean.
lifeless - when something isn’t moving and looks dead.
2. Draw the incident that happened at the river.

3. Answer these comprehension questions to show your understanding of the text.
a) Where were the boys playing? The boys were playing at the Marae and it was not a place for childrens to play.
b) Why do you think the boys pushed Te Whanaupani into the water? because Te Whanaupani told the boys to stop kicking him and he said he will go tell on his Mama.
c) What happened to Te Whanaupani? The boys pushed Te Whanaupani into the river and then his Mama took him straight to the doctor.
d) Why was Haumu giving her mokopuna to Mama? She gave the baby to Mama because to replace the child that Mama had lost.
